Below is an explanation of a number of popular IT and telecommunications terms used on this website.

PBX/PABX -  Private Branch Exchange

A telephone exchange owned by a private business

VoIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol 

VoIP is the abbreviation for Voice Over Internet Protocol, also called IP Telephony, Internet Telephony, Broadband Telephony, Broadband phone and Voice over Broadband.

IVR - Interactive Voice Response

IVR is the abbreviation for Interactive Voice Response and is a computerised system that allows a telephone caller to select an option from a voice menu and otherwise interface with a computer system. 

ISDN - Integrated Services Digital Network

Is the most common digital standard for fixed telephony devices, designed to allow digital transmission of voice and data over ordinary telephone copper wires. Using ISDN results in better quality and higher data speeds than are available on analogue systems and enable advanced call features for the user.

ICT - Information Communication or Computer Technology

A generic term encompassing the Information Communication Industry and is primarily the study or business of developing and using technology to process information and aid communications. This encompasses data such as internet and email or voice streaming which covers all types of telephony.

DDI - Direct Dialling In

An abbreviation for Direct Dialling Inward (also known as Direct Inward Dialling). A system which allows an organization to have numerous individual phone numbers for each person or workstation in it's a PBX system that runs off a small block of dedicated phone number.

CTI - Computer Telephony Integration

Telephones of some description have been in existence for far longer than computers. However as technology advanced it was only a matter of time before computers could integrate, simplify and manage telecommunications efficiently and economically. In simple terms CTI refers to systems (such as the Dual River system) that enable a computer to act as a call center, accepting incoming calls and routing them to the appropriate device or person.


VPN - Virtual Private Network

VPN is the abbreviation for Virtual Private Network, a network that is constructed by using public wires to connect nodes.

OSS - Open Source Software

OSS is the abbreviation for Open Source Software. Generically, open source refers to a program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design free of charge. Open source sprouted in the technological community as a response to proprietary software owned by corporations.

PDA - Personal Digital Assistant

PDA is the abbreviation for Personal Digital Assistant, a handheld device that combines computing, telephone/fax, Internet and networking features.

IMAP/POP3

IMAP is the abbreviation for Internet Message Access Protocol, a protocol (or set of instructions) for retrieving email messages.

POP 3 is the abbreviation for Post Office Protocol, a set of instructions used to retrieve email from a mail server. Most e-mail applications (sometimes called an e-mail client use the POP protocol, although some can use the newer IMAP.

Linux

Linux is a freely-distributable open source operating system that runs on a number of hardware platforms.

Cellular Gateway

A Cellular Gateway is an optional Dual River module that enables you to merge your business phone network with your mobile phones. This means that your mobile could be a cost-free extension of your desk phone and support free mobile phone calls between your office and members of your business group.

What is a Telco?

This abbreviation applies to the Telecommunications providers who supply the infrastructure and services necessary to perform landline telephony operations. New Zealand is served by 2 providers Telecom and Telstra.
